Auto Lease Extensions and Inaccurate Credit Reports: Legal Help in Virginia & DC

consumer credit law firm near Fairfax

The Wall Street Journal reported (https://www.wsj.com/articles/equifax-sent-lenders-inaccurate-credit-scores-on-millions-of-consumers-11659467483) that Equifax provided inaccurate credit scores when consumers applied for auto loans, mortgages, and credit cards.  Reporting indicated that Equifax sent the inaccurate credit scores from the middle of March 2022 to early April 2022.  If Equifax provided a credit score for your credit application during that time frame, you should check and see if your credit score is now higher such that you qualify for better credit terms.

Error Presented as a “Glitch”

Equifax claimed the inaccurate credit scores appeared because of a computer “glitch” in its system.  Whether Equifax can be believed is up for debate because it has a history of failed compliance that affects consumers like the 2017 Equifax credit hack that resulted in the exposure of personal information for approximately 150 million Americans.

Not deemed as a “Meaningful Impact” to Equifax Investors

The WSJ article included a quote from Equifax CEO Mark Begor as telling Equifax investors that the impact “not something that’s meaningful to Equifax.”  While Equifax’s CEO comments could be surprising on some level, our firm was not surprised by the comment because Blankingship & Christiano has litigated inaccurate credit report cases involving Equifax for more than fifteen years.

Inaccurate Credit Reports can be Very Damaging to Consumers

Our experience with Equifax has lead to our opinion that Equifax knows well that inaccurate credit reports are very damaging to consumers and of little concern to Equifax.  The reasonable conclusion from the CEO’s statement is that Equifax cares only about its bottom line profits as demonstrated by its outsourcing of its grave investigatory duties for credit dispute investigations to third world countries to save money.  In our experience, consumers with inaccurate Equifax credit reports that lose mortgages, pay higher interest rates, or have threatened security clearances have never been Equifax’s priority.

What can consumers do to fight inaccurate credit reports?  Consumers should review their credit file disclosures, dispute inaccurate credit information and contact a lawyer that specializes in suing Equifax for inaccurate credit reports.  Blankingship & Christiano fights for consumers and holds credit reporting agencies like Equifax accountable for the damage they cause with inaccurate credit file data.
